The Recording Studio receives an upgrade to Pro Tools 9 HD
Pro Tools has always been our no 1 choice of software here at Sonicworld Productions. The latest version of Avid’s Pro Tools ( Pro Tools 9 HD ) makes collaboration that bit easier as the software no longer needs connection to expensive HD cards and interfaces to run. This of course means that recordings can be made part at home and part in the Pro studio making projects more affordable from start to finish. We are still running an HD 2 Accell system however now on an 8 core Mac Pro with 6 gig of ram. We are excited about the latest upgrades and the recourses they give us to take on more complex mixes and music production tasks.
MIG recording and mixing at Sonicworld
In September of last year work on recording overdubs and mixing MIG’s debut EP commenced at Sonicworld.
MIG’s sound is a hard hitting combination of rock, funk, soulful blues and rap. Unique original compositions and ‘old school’ values, have made this studio project great fun.
The band arrived with some already very complete sounding tracks recorded in plymouth. With some guitar and vocal overdubs now complete, over the past few weeks we have been exploring post production possibilities and getting the best out of the mixes. Now in the final stages of mixing the tracks are due to be released early this year.
Country Blues Artist Harry Hornsey records at Sonicword
Back in June 2010, guitarist and singer Harry Hornsey came into the studio to record a collection of classic country blues tracks. Harry is a solo performer who’s live shows capture the true spirit of country blues and ragtime with a unique and raw energy.
For the recording it was important to achieve an organic and pure sound making sure the final record didn’t turn out too modern. We opted for a three mic setup running through ‘Crane Song Spider’ mic pre’s with plenty of Dave Hills analogue push to tape effect applied. Compression was kept to a minimum while tracking allowing for plenty of dynamics. Things were kept simple in the mix too with no use of reverb. Ambience was achieved with the use of a large diaphragm condenser mic placed pretty much dead center in the room, reminiscent of how the early blues records were recorded.
It is not often that artists record debut albums with instruments they have made themselves! As well as being a great guitarist Harry is a talented guitar luthier. The two fine instruments heard on this record are both 100% hand made by Harry himself!!
The album is now being mastered and due for release in January 2011. . . in the meantime, here is a sneak preview of whats to come:
The final track choices are:
- Rope Strechin’ Blues
- It’ll Never Happen No More
- He’s in the Jail House Now
- Kind Hearted Woman
- Harry’s Rag
- Meat Shakin’ Mama
- I Got mine
- Malted Milk
- Filthy Rich
- One Dime Blues
- Ain’t Misbehavin’
The album will be available soon from Harry’s website is which is now under construction.
